    • of Coats Prairie, Mo. Listed in 1850 census Calloway Co., Missouri; DWL 83. Per The Callaway Weekly Gazette 28 Nov. 1888: "Another old pioneer gone. Col. Marshall S. Coats died Wednesday, at his residence in this city after an illness of several weeks. .....He was born in Tennessee on 16 Oct. 1816 and was brought to Missouri by his parents a year or two after. .....He was a colonel of militia in ante-bellum days..... He was married to Artemesa Duncan who survives him. The fruits of this union were two daughters, Mrs. L.T. Meador of this city and Mrs. Kem McCall of Coats Prairie and one son, who joined Price's Army, went south and has never been heard of since. .....burial at new cemetery."

  • Notes 
    • Led singing at the Liberty and Reform Christian Churches. His hymnal is in the possession of John Brierly McCall (June, 2000). He was orphaned as an infant. According to the Callaway County, Missouri, Probate Court Records, Book A, pg. 596, for May 13, 1835: "Thomas G. Rankin this day came to court and exhibited for settlement his accounts as Guardian for Marshall S. Coats, infant orphan of James Coats, deceased..." James Coats' widow, Mary, then married Thomas Rankin (abt 1822 - no record found) who was ten years younger than she.
