      Death of a Pioneer

Robert Henry McCall, one of the pioneers of this county, died at the residence of his son, Dr. W. S. McCall, in this city, on Thursday the 22nd inst., in the 81st year of his age. He was born in Franklin County, Virginia, February 1, 1806, and was married to Elizabeth Gilbert in 1832, and in 1834 moved to this county and settled in Auxvasse Township, which was then so sparsely settled as to be almost a wilderness.

There now remains but about three persons living in Auxvasse Township who were there and heads of families when he first came, viz: Dudley Kemp, D. C. Arns and E. G. Berry. His aged wife, with whom he had been living for over 54 years, still survives, in the 79th year of her age. He had many friends by whom he was familiarly known as "Uncle Henry"; was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and leaves a wife and one son, Dr. W. McCall.

His funeral took place last Friday at Unity Church, where Reverend W. H. Burnham conducted the ceremonies, in the presence of a large congregation of friends and relatives.

    • [note from Glenn McCall's letter] She was a sister of Angeline Gilbert, who married James Elbert McCall; surety: Samuel C. Gilbert. In his compilation of McCall family history, Dr. W. S. McCall said: "It is believed that Mildred (mother) would not let Elizabeth (wife) into her house. Elizabeth was supposed to be a "free state" (poor white trash) but most people believe she was an indentured servant and below the social level of the McCalls. This is believed to be the reason Robert and Elizabeth moved to Callaway County, Missouri in 1834." [JBM notes 2010: the Gilberts now appear to come from a social level at least equal to the McCalls!]
