  • Notes
    • I'm cautious about this relationship. Many sources say Abigail was born in 1704 in Concord , daughter of Timothy Rice and Abigail Merrett. Others suggest Abigail was the daughter of Samuel Rice and Elizabeth King, and was born 10 Mar 1673 at Marlborough. Her gravestone (originally in Worcester Common, and transcribed) says she died in 1770, which is generally accepted, and that she was age 70.

Still, I think the most likely date of birth, 1688/1689, comes from two reliable sources: Legislators of Massachusetts General Court, 1691-1780, giving her birth year as 1689, and Abigail's guardianship record saying that she was "about thirteen" in 1700. See the additional information on Palmer Goulding.

      (15 Dec 2015 - I sent the following to info@edmund-rice.org)

      Good morning –
I’ve been aware of the conflicting evidence on the birthdate and parentage of Abigail Rice, wife of Captain Palmer Goulding, my 7th great-grandparents. I had copied your editorial notes from http://www.edmund-rice.org/era5gens/p29.htm#i5005 regarding her, and the suggested birth year of 1700 based on the monumental inscription from her stone in the old Worcester Common burial ground: died 1770, “a. 70 y.”

I was working on her line over the weekend and feel more confident of a birth date of 1688/1689, in Concord, daughter of Timothy Rice and Abigail Marrett, as Ward has said. Here’s why:

      1) Legislators of Massachusetts General Court, 1691-1780, profiling Capt. Palmer Goulding, on page 3083, says: “married, Abigail Rice (c 1689-1770) in 1722, 5 ch.”
      2) Middlesex Probate Record 18813 is a guardianship for Abigail Rice, “daughter of Timothy & Abigail, dec'd” dated 7 February 1700, and states that Abigail is "a minor of about thirteen years of age..." which suggests 1687/88. I found both of these online from www.AmericanAncestors.org, NEHGS.

SO: Given the imprecision of birth dates, ages, and memories, I suggest we accept Ward’s opinion as plausible until proven otherwise: that Abigail’s birth was not recorded for some reason;  but that she was the daughter of Timothy Rice of Concord who died in 1692 when she was maybe 4 or 5 years old; that her mother Abigail Marrett Rice died before 1 Feb 1700 which precipitated the guardianship petition in the Middlesex court; that Abigail moved to Sudbury (perhaps to the home of a relative there) and there met Palmer Goulding, as their marriage record says (Concord VR, pg. 102) that they were “both of Sudbury,” and that she took her groom back to Concord for the wedding because that had been her home until (at least) age 13.

Plausible? No, this doesn’t account for the absence of a birth record, nor answer the question of what she was doing until her marriage in 1722. But it almost reaches the level of the preponderance of evidence.

      Thanks for listening,
