[From Alma Campbell's letter]
...the restless pioneer spirit soon drove him westward, and his journey ended at Wilmington Illinois, a thriving country town. Here he met and married Hannah Elizabeth Pennington, a girl of nineteen, who was a helpmeet indeed, and whose alert mind and ready sympathies shared his ideals and aspirations and rejoiced in his achievements...
...On June 16, 1869, she married Merritt Bates Campbell. The day was ushered in by a heavy frost, following several weeks of warm weather, and stoves were brought out and set up for the occasion. The wedding trip of this young couple took them as far as Bloomington and Springfield where they were caught in a heavy rain and father went to purchase an umbrella. Although characterized all his later life by extremely good and accurate taste, he was in his youth slightly color blind, and returned not with the green umbrella, which was wanted, but a beautiful blue one. And for the three days of their honeymoon they plodded around under this brilliant canopy.
Their first meal in their own home was spread on a little drop leaf table, one of the pieces that father purchased at "secondhand" when he furnished the one room in which he slept and doctored his patients for three years.

Notes |
- Ontario Report, Ontario, CA - Nov. 8, 1902, pg.. 7 (Sat. edition)
The Death Of Mrs. Campbell
The death of Mrs. Hannah E. Campbell, wife of Dr. M. B. Campbell, medical superintendent of the State Hospital at Highland and mother of Dr. Robert A. Campbell died at the superintendent's cottage near the hospital at 6:30 Friday evening last week. The remains were interred at Bellevue cemetery, Ontario, Sunday afternoon, after services in the cemetery. A sad feature of the death of Mrs. Campbell was that during the long service of her husband as medical superintendent she had made her home at Claremont, because of an absence of a superintendent's home near the hospital. That home had just been provided by the State and Dr. and Mrs. Campbell rejoiced at the opportunity for enjoying home life together again. During her illness, Dr. R. A. Campbell spent a large portion of his time with his mother. A friend of Mrs. Campbell pays the following tribute to her memory: "The death of Hannah Elizabeth Campbell, wife of Dr. M. B. Campbell, the well known superintendent of the CA State Hospital for the Insane, comes as a great shock to a large circle of friends and acquaintances. While apparently in excellent health, Mrs. Campbell was suddenly prostrated by a violent attack of pneumonia which, in spite of all that medical skill could do, after eight days came to its fatal termination, Friday, October 31st. Coming to CA from Joliet, Ills. the family had lived for eleven years at Claremont, but had recently removed to Patton, where the State had built a comfortable cottage for the family of the Superintendent of the Asylum.
Besides her husband, there are left of the immediate family the aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Pennington, now living in Ontario and five children, Dr. Robert Campbell, (next two lines illegible) are with their father at Patton and Miss Cora, a teacher at Redlands. Mrs. Campbell was a woman of rare Christian character and the home was a center of delightful and ennobling influences reaching out into all the life of the college, the church and the community. Her children rose up and call her blessed and the whole community in which she lived will long cherish and revere her memory."
Card Of Thanks
We are deeply grateful to many friends in Ontario and elsewhere for kindly (word illegible) and expressions of sympathy attending the demise of Mrs. Hannah E. Campbell. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Campbell
