- Samuel Sewall recorded in his diary on 5 July 1685, "Mr. Sherman the Father is taken delirious in Sudbury Pulpit [while giving a guest sermon] so fain to be born away; is now sick of the Fever and Ague." Cotton Mather wrote that Sherman was "taken sick of an intermitting but malignant fever; which yet abated, that he found opportunity to return unto his own house at Water-town. But his fever then renewing upon him, it prevailed so far that he soon expired his holy soule…" He was buried in Watertown "After a life of faithful service to Christ in the Church for upwards of 45 years, in the fullness of time he passed away and received from Christ the palm of victory. In the 72nd year of his age, August 8, A.D. 1685." The Latin inscription on his tombstone in Watertown translates as "Sacred to the memory of John Sherman a man distinguished for his piety, character and truth; a profound theologian; as a preacher a veritable Chrysostom; unsurpassed in his knowledge of the liberal arts, particularly mathematics; a faithful pastor of the Church of Watertown in New England; an Overseer and Fellow of Harvard College.

Notes |
- Seventh child and fourth son of EDMUND and GRACE (MAKIN) SHERMAN (GM2, VI:282-87).
Rev. JOHN SHERMAN (3d minister of Wat.), b. in Dedham, Eng., Dec. 26, 1613: A. B., Trinity College, Cambridge, 1629, A.M., 1633. Dr. Eliot says he came to America in 1635, and went to Watertown. He soon moved to New Haven Colony, where he was a magistrate several years. He returned to Watertown between 1644 and '48, and became its third minister a few years before Rev. Mr. Knowles returned to England. He was admitted freeman, May 19, 1669, and d. Aug. 8, 1685. aged 72. [For some account of his talents, character, and services, see Francis, Farmer, Eliot, &c] By his first wife (?ABIGAIL), he is said to have had 6 children, and by the 2d. MARY LAUNCE, (according to Mather, a granddaughter of Thomas Darcy, Earl of Rivers), [See Genealogical Register IV., p. 307.]), Mather said he had by her 20 children Although he had many children, this is probably a great exaggeration. He had 7 children whose births are recorded in Watertown. His Will, dated Aug. 6, proved Oct. 6. 1685, mentions wife Mary, son Samuel Willard, for children of his first wife, Abigail, £12; children of son Bezaleel, d., £10; dr. Mary Allen, £10; son Daniel, £15; son Samuel, £10; dr. Mary Barron, £10; other children, James, John, Abial, Elizabeth, Hester, Grace, Mercy; son James, executor. His widow, Mary, died in Watertown, Mar. 9, 1709-10. N.B. He had a daughter Mary by each wife, both living at the same time.
