- Louetta was widowed when her husband James died in June, 1908. She moved to Hill County, Texas, two months later, where her husband's first cousin, Hugh Montgomery Huffstutler, was already living.
From the Blount County, Alabama, Southern Democrat, 13 September 1917. Written from Birome, Texas:
On the 11th Day of August 1908 with all of my children with me, I left the State of Alabama for Hill County Texas and arrived at Hubbard City on the 13th day of August. Not knowing what Texas was, we thought we had landed in a storm. Well, we soon changed our minds about that after we were here a few days. So the next thing we got to enjoy was the black mud. Well, it did not take me long to decide old Alabama was the only place worth living in. Well, as time passed, we decided that Texas was alright and 9 years have passed and we are still here hugging Texas. I still love old Alabama and hope some day to make a visit back there but I guess my home will always be in Texas as most of my children have married and settled here.
We have farmed ever since we have been here. Two years we have made complete failures on corn and this year is one of them. Wheat and oats were very good. Cotton is not very good this year either. We have not had but one season in 15 months but the good Lord saw fit to break the drought at last and we are getting the rain now. In some parts of Texas they have had good rains and also have good crops but the hard times are on, war is the cry with most everybody: War, War and what are we going to do. Well, if I should answer that questions, I would say, do your duty, be a good Soldier for Jesus Christ, have faith in God and he will fight our battles for us. How I thank God that it has even been my privilege to live in a Christian Land. My thoughts go back to old Alabama and to childhood, and how I thank God for those good Christians that taught me so much about God. Some of them have passed over and are now walking the streets of gold and some are still here doing what they can for the uplift of God's Kingdom. God grant that their last days may be their best days.
Now I would not have anyone think that all of the Christians are back in Alabama. We have them here and good ones too. If you want a lot of good friends, just come to Texas and do the right thing and they will stand by you.
For fear this finds the waste basket, I will ring off but would like to tell more about Texas. Mrs. L. M. Huffstutler
