  • Notes
    • A seemingly infinite number of explanations can be offered for the identity of son Timothy's first wife. In his will, John calls her Sarah Sibley. ln the Dedham marriage record she is called Sarah Pennan. This latter surname might be a scribal scribble for Penniman, in which case there is a Sarah Penniman, baptized at Chipping Ongar, Essex, to George and Mary Penniman, making her a niece to the immigrant James Penniman of Boston and Braintree [TAG 74: 12-18]. This would not comfortably explain why she is called Sibley by John Dwight. Another possibility is that John and Sarah Sibley of Charlestown had a daughter, Sarah, before coming to New England, and that she married first a Pennan. and second Timothy. No convenient death record for a Pennan/Penniman fits this scenario, however. Yet another possibility is that John Sibley's wife may have been married before to a Pennan, had a daughter Sarah Pennan, who then proceeded to marry Timothy. John Dwight might have thought of her as a Sibley and called her such in his will.
