The wife of Isaac STEARNS was the daughter of John Barker of S.N., clothier. Her mother married 2nd - Munnings of Gaynes Colne, Essex,England; letter of attorney 24 Aug 1640. Settled in Watertown, near Mount Auburn. He was adm. freeman, May 18, 1631, which is the earliest date of any such admission, and he was Selectman several years. In 1647, he and Mr. Biscoe, were appointed by the Selectmen, "to consider how the bridge over the river shall be built, and to agree with the workmen for doing it, according to their best discretion." This is, says Dr. Francis, in his history, " the first mention of a bridge over Charles River, at Watertown." He d. June 19, 1671, leaving a wid. MARY, who d. Ap. 2, 1677.
The births of only three of his children are recorded in the town records, and it is probable that two, perhaps three, of them were born in England. His pedigree has not been ascertained, nor is it certainly known what town he came from ; but it is very probable that he came from the Parish of Nayland in Suffolk. Mr. Somerby obtained the following extract from the Parish Register of Nayland :

Mary Barker (dau of John, John, Richard) was b. abt 1600; m. Isaac Stearns of Higham by Nayland, 5/20/1622 at Stoke Nayland; 9 ch.; went to NE abt 1630. prob with the Winthrop Fleet. d. 4/23/1677. per Ancestry of Mary Barker wife of Isaac Stearns, by John Threlfall.
Given name may be Margaret. Dau of John Barker of Nayland, Suffolk (will 24 Jun 1587) and Margaret Mawle or Mowle (will dated 24 Dec 1589).
