MRS. ELIZABETH MOFFET YOUNG
Sarah Elizabeth Moffet Young, wife of the late Rev. W. D. H. Young, is the last of her generations of two large American families. Through her father she is of the International Moffet clan, and through her mother, whose name was Alvord, of the Massachusetts and New York families, of which nineteen were Revolutionary heroes. Deceased was born at Old Middletown, Iroquois County, Illinois, December 26, 1845. Her parents soon moved to Lowell, LaSalle County, Illinois. Her earliest memories are of her father's, Rev. Ruben Moffet's, circuit riding ministerial trips, the building of the Illinois Central Railroad at Tonica, Illinois, and the driving of stock to the Chicago market. Her schooling was at Bloomington Seminary, an institution now almost forgotten. At eighteen years of age she was a teacher at Grand Detour, Illinois. At twenty years of age she married Rev. Young. She was a faithful helpmate and pastor's wife during nearly forty years of Methodist itinerary. She filled many useful places as choir leader, organist and all the activities with the youth of the charges, some of which were as follows: Wenona, Henepin, Hamilton, Carthage, Galva, Illiopolis, Homer, Watseka, Chatsworth, Bloomington and others.
Prior to thirteen years ago, when she moved to Moweaqua, she had resided twenty-four years at her East Walnut home in Bloomington. Mrs. Young was of a scholarly mind, having been a teacher of foreign languages while Rev. Young was principal of a Methodist Academy in Missouri. She was a tireless reader, and until a few months ago was thoroughly conversant with national, state and church affairs. She was firm in her belief that it was a woman's patriotic duty to vote. Mrs. Young is preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Katherine Yale of California, and Ruben Moffet, a brother, who died in the Civil War. Her husband died April 30, 1902, as also her daughter, Mrs. Lulu Van Petten and Mrs. Wilha Campbell, the latter of Los Angeles. She is survived by Mrs. J. W. Dodson, Moweaqua, Mrs. R. A. Campbell, Los Angeles, and Dr. M. D. Young of Tempe, Arizona. Also by thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Mrs. Young kept up her Sunday school teaching until about eighty years of age. She was active in all church organizations and W. C. T. U. She was a woman of great faith, a progressive citizen and a mother in all that the word implies.
