Notes |
- Early New England Families Study Project (William Shattuck profile, p5)
The curious statement in William Shattuck's will about his "ten younger children" suggests that there may have been others. As William was only about 22 when his first child in New England was born, it seems unlikely that he had an earlier marriage. The clear intent to omit said child or children from the will, strongly suggests the possibility of illegitimate offspring, perhaps born in England.
The 19 June 1683 petition of Richard Norcross asking the court for advice on how to distribute his step-son Benjamin's share of his father's estate, stated that his wife's sons were aged 21 and daughter was 18. These ages are clearly incorrect. Samuel's birth recorded in Watertown shows that he would have been age 17. The petition states that Benjamin died in his 20th year (i.e., age 19), and so definitely was not 21 in 1683. While no date of death for Benjamin is given in the petition to the court, he probably died soon before the petition was made. Benjamin is named before Samuel in their father's will, indicating he was the older of the two.
Likewise, if Abigail was 18 in 1683 she would have been born about 1665, but then she would have been 13 years old when she married Jonathan Morse in 1678, which begs the question of why she would still be listed as a minor under her mother's charge five years after her marriage.
